In 635 CE, a Nestorian missionary named Alopen arrived in Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an), the Tang Dynasty capital, bringing Christian teachings and scriptures. Nestorian missionaries translated these ancient Christian texts into Chinese while adapting their teachings to resonate with Chinese religious traditions, such as Taoism and Buddhism. This fusion resulted in a distinctive form of Christianity that emphasized themes of harmony, compassion, and universal, as opposed to theological, salvation.
In these translations, Christian concepts are expressed using familiar Buddhist and Taoist metaphors, such as referring to Yeshua [Jesus] as the "Sacred Light" and God as the "Cool Wind." The sutras emphasize Yeshua as a compassionate teacher, akin to a bodhisattva. They describe the Trinity using Taoist imagery of threefold unity and discuss the nature of sin, grace, and salvation in ways that align with ancient Chinese cosmology.
Christianity was known in China as Jingjiao 景教 meaning "The Luminous Religion." The Jesus Sutras were uncovered in the early 20th century as part of a larger cache of ancient manuscripts discovered in the Mogao Caves near Dunhuang and other archaeological sites. These texts, along with the Nestorian Stele monument [781 CE], have been instrumental in understanding the history of Christianity in China. Join Rev Dale Allen Hoffman for a thrilling afternoon exploring a deeply profound subject that is virtually unknown to modern seekers.
